How important is mental resilience?

How much do we need that skill in our world of deep unpredictability?

We all face challenges in our work, in our family life, in our sport and it has always been my aim on this podcast to share with you inspirational stories from people who have the qualities to deal with the ‘turbulence’ of life.

Joe Sillett is one such person.

From a chance remark and a twist of fate Joe built up the cricket equipment firm Woodworm from nothing into a multi million pound operation in a few short years.

This culminated in securing some of the game’s greatest names such as Freddie Flintoff and Kevin Peterson to use the Woodworm brand.

The pinnacle was the legendary Ashes series of 2005 when these two protagonists played a vital role in regaining the Ashes for England after a barren spell of nearly twenty years.

From the pinnacle of this achievement and looking like he was set for life Joe then became a victim of what he calls ‘the perfect financial storm’.

The great financial crash of 2007 and 2008 had a devastating effect on his business leading to a voluntary liquidation.

From an unbelievable high to a soul destroying low.

This is where Joe and his story get REALLY interesting from a Brain Booster perspective.

At this point Joe could have withdrawn

He could have felt very sorry for himself

He could have moaned about the economy

He could have focused on how much bad luck he had

But he didn’t …….

He describes how he got through

The catharsis of writing a book on Peak Performance called ‘Mentality’ where he interviewed some of sports greatest names like Lee Westwood, Phil ‘the power’ Taylor, Damon Hill, A.P.McCoy

When he needed inspiration he sought inspiration

How he then worked through a couple of other setbacks until a chance conversation with his wife led him to his current venture
